Abstract or description

The exhibition was a collaboration with psycologist Dr Josie Butcher. The research was in response to a long term Goverment directive to develop the communication skills of proffessional health workers in particular to patients living with cancer and their sexuality. The work is form of art activim, being used by the NHS to challenge the social and polical power of proffessionals in relation to their patients. The language of textiles suports common understanding of purpose, but allows new readings and challenges through the context of presentation. The evaluations from the experiential workshop will contribute to future international conferences.
The work exhibited shows familiar objects reconfigured to deny their function .Distancing chairs through long extended arm rests appear to extend the comfort of the space. The reconfiguration in reality denies the ability to communicate. Bounderies are redifined by the restructing, as in the human body after surgery for sexual cancers. The properness and tradition interwoven in the piece belies the difficulties of engaging with the objects. As the decency and properness of clinical spaces and approaches to health proffessionals can deny the communication of pain and embaressment of bodily and sexual hhurt.
A paper deliverd at the Royal College of Art in the Design History Department disscussed ideas relating to Textiles and Femminism in the making of the piece Seperation for the Exhibition /conference.

The work was a collaborative piece with Cheshire & Wirral partnership NHS foundation Trust and The Christies Hospital.
