Abstract or description

An analysis of the inter disciplinary research at Hawthorn Ridge Crater in France. The lecture explained the film production methods, technologies and new narratives applied at the crater at Beaumont Hamel.

The lecture at the Union Jack Club in London - for serving and Ex-Serving non-commissioned members of the Armed Forces since 1907, included examining landscapes and battlefield topography using drone film technologies and factual production methods using interview and archive technique to create new knowledge for the public about the historic World War One crater.

The Hawthorn Crater explosion was filmed to mark the start of the Somme offensive on film on July 1st 1916 by war camera operator Geoffrey Malins and is an iconic location in France for film history today.

The creation of new content using film and by applying the Production House methodology allows the ongoing documentary work to be created and disseminated to the public. It also captures the inter disciplinary work of historians, scientists and archaeologists on the project site in France for the public to gain access to academic research.

The event was organised by the Western Front Association. The WFA aims to perpetuate the memory, courage and comradeship of all those who fought on all sides and who served their countries during The Great War
