Abstract or description

A Saharan Diary is an experimental documentary that relates in part to techniques I developed in my 72 hour filmmaking experiments. For example, the the spectacular landscapes of Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya might tempt one to use high-end cinematic technology, but this film is shot on consumer video cameras. The film follows a group of unlikely travellers as they travel overland to the Sahara on three separate trips. The documentary deliberately blurs the boundary between document and storytelling by revealing that the travellers learn as much about themselves along the route as they do about the people they meet.

The film also explores a collision of cultures, all the more revealing in light of the Arab Spring.

The film premiered in Solihull Film Festival (2012), screened at Stoke Your Fires (2012) and MENAR in Sofia (2013).
