Abstract or description

This was one of a number of papers at a conference in Oxford organised and supported by the European Science Foundation and Standing Committee for Social Sciences (ESF). The papers were subsequently published with the support and sponsorship of the ESF as a chapter in a book entitled ‘Integration of Third Country Nationals in the European Union: The Equality Challenge’ (eds. Sonia Morano-Foadi and Micela Malena) (Edward Elgar, 2012). The chapter was co-authored with Cordelia Carlitz, and is entitled ‘Inequalities of Family Members of EEA and Non-EEA Nationals: ‘Integration’ and Barriers to Family Reunification in the Post-Lisbon Era’. The focus of the work was the use by Member States of integration requirements as a means of regulating and restricting residence, free movement of family members of EU nationals, and family reunification. The paper (and chapter) includes case studies from several countries including Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
The paper (and the book) were the culmination of research undertaken between 2010 and 2012 with a number of other project colleagues. Besides Cordelia Cartlitz (University of Konstanz and the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, Germany), the group included Carmen Perez Gonzalez (Carlos III University of Madrid), Karin de Vries (Free University of Amsterdam and European University Institute, Florence), and Aino Saarinen (University of Helsinki).
