Abstract or description
This monograph considers the UK wages system and its operation. It considers the typology of wage systems, including 'time' rates, 'performance-related pay', etc, and the way they operate. It examines wages issues at each of the key stages in the employment cycle, namely at the outset, when wages issues are a key part of recruitment and selection processes operate; during the subsistence of the employment relationship, when the 'wage-work bargain' operates at the core of that relationship; and on termination. A range of individual and collective labour law matters are addressed, as well as issues relating to legal regulation of the wage bargain (at Common law and under statute). It considers regulatory aspects, including requirements in measures like the Wages Act 1986, Equal Pay Act 1970, and employment protection legislation. It looks, in particular, at parties' performance and responsibilities. Changes to wages, and their legal effect, are discussed.
