The LEGO SERIOUS PLAY (LSP) Method is based on a set of fundamental beliefs about leadership and organisations. People naturally want to contribute, be part of something bigger and take ownership of ideas.

The purpose of LSP is to change 'lean backwards' meetings into 'lean forward meetings' resulting in more participation, more insights. LSP is facilitated thinking, communication and problem-solving technique for use with organisations, teams and individuals.

Aberdeen is often perceived as a monotonous, cloudy and rainy city, where the 'Grey City' or 'Granite City' nicknames derive from. What people may not know is that Aberdeen is also known as the 'Floral Capital of Scotland', awarded with the Britain in Bloom Best City Award multiple times, indicating the splash of colours found within its greyscale tones. The buildings themselves also have different colours within them, either as part of the original colouring of the stone or due to weathering. With the aim to bring awareness of Aberdeen's colours and unique beauty, overshadowed by the weather and stereotypes, our group is designing a pavilion developed for this year's Look Again festival in Aberdeen. The whole idea revolves around the appreciation of the rain and the hidden colours of the city by creating a simple post and beam structure that includes an interactive and fun interior. The hanged fabric and dense coloured string intent to resemble the rain and wind, with the colours and silhouettes of the local vernacular interpreting the different seasons, times of the day and important aspects of the city.

The installation is part of the Look Again Festival in Aberdeen.

The Livingroom promotes human interaction, constant exchange of stories/narratives, and a 'Public Livingroom' within the city where everyone can feel at home.

The main idea of The Livingroom is for people to leave their old books within the space and borrow another one left by somebody else. By exchanging books, people would be encouraged to start conversations, meet new friends and stop for a moment, enjoying life. As part of this year’s Look Again Festival ‘New Narratives’, The Livingroom embodies this idea through several different aspects in the design, all of which actively integrate people’s interaction.

It is PEOPLE who create new narratives every day, we are just giving them the tools to do it.

One of the UK's most prolific designers Morag Myserscough will be working around the city's historic Mercat Cross, thought to be the best example of its type in Scotland. For Love at First Sight, the artist bridges design and art, using her signature graphic style to create a free-standing structure that will reference the history of the space as a meeting point. Myserscough draws from her family history, and the moment that her parents fell in love at first sight in Aberdeen. She will be working with poet Jo Gilbert, who will produce text for the project through workshops with local groups. The completed structure will be animated throughout the festival with performance, poetry and music.

Temporarily located in the artist's front garden, the Colourful Structure investigates an interest in the form and structure of 1960's and 1970's brutalist architecture, research into Fife's industrial past as well as Oakley's continuous study of the line and its potential across a variety of formats.

Materials sourced from residential walks around the locality, reclaimed and reused from pavements and open-topped waste containers, Space is a Place creates a new playful space to observe/ponder and shadow watch as the sun makes its daily arc.

Independent, London-based research centre Theatrum Mundi presents an exhibition documenting the ‘urban backstage’ – the often-invisible spaces in which culture is produced before it meets the public eye. Focusing on the neighbourhood of Elephant and Castle in south London, it offers a window into rehearsal rooms, food production, makers studios and creative workspaces, asking what it is that makes these places work and how it is to use them.

The exhibition will feature photos, drawings, and interviews, as well as a short film by videographer Lucia Sceranková bringing to life the different kinds of work that constitute the backstage of culture in the city. Theatrum Mundi will also be using the exhibition as a base for the next phase of their research based in Glasgow and will be conducting field work in the city for its duration. Every weekday from 16.00 – 18.00 exhibition will act as an open office, inviting the public to meet the team and discuss the work. Copies of our publication Making Cultural Infrastructure will also be available to take away.

This exhibition is linked to Test Unit, a summer school run at Civic House by Agile City, and forms part of the ongoing research project Making Cultural Infrastructure, supported by the Ax:son Johnson Foundation and KTH Center for the Future of Places. Aiming to challenge narrow definitions of culture in planning, focused on the frontstage and the creative industries to the exclusion of other modes of cultural production, the project takes a close-up look at settings that condense different productive activities. Taking into account practices including writing, rehearsing, and making, alongside light industry and artisanship, the project aims to develop a broad account of the what constitutes urban ‘backstages’.

We live in a world which over uses the term sustainable there are multiple meanings. This is partly because the ultimate definition renders our world as unsustainable, eventually everything finite comes to an end. Should greater emphasis be given to the joy of life while it is still with us or should we stave off the impending horror for as long as possible. A Guide to Being Unsustainable explores what makes life bearable and why that is not at odds with what we think sustainability mighty be. The Scottish Ecological Design Association has published the first two parts of the guide which will be brought together into one lifestyle magazine. An exhibit of Pattern Design's work in countries such as Qatar, Peru and UAE, demonstrates how the strong cultural heritage of these locations influence the Architectural Design.

Pattern specialise in Sports and Stadia design, and through high profile projects create Architecture of its place, with an identity aligned to its immediate context. Al Rayyan Stadium, currently under construction for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is veiled in prominent Qatari symbols to create a unique pattern.

The VIDENA Sports Complex, currently under construction for the 2019 Pan-American Games in Peru takes influence from ancient Peruvian Architecture and textiles, creating a link through history. Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi uses local fauna as an inspiration, not only aesthetically, but also in creating a comfortable environment for watching football.

Creating Architecture with a sense of place is key to Pattern's design ethos, highlighted by these projects.

Meadows to George Street: Streets for People is one of the winners of Sustrans Scotland’s 2017 Community Links PLUS competition, now known as Places for Everyone. Places for Everyone is an opportunity to conceptualise, design and deliver exemplary and inspirational walking, cycling and placemaking projects in Scotland.

Our vision is to transform cycling, walking, public spaces and accessibility for all on some of Edinburgh’s busiest and most iconic streets.

Our design proposals include new segregated cycleways, wider pavements, and pedestrian priority areas. We propose to close some streets to some types of traffic. We also want to plant new trees and create new public seating areas.

As part of our consultation we wanted to invite people to enjoy a street usually dominated by vehicles, to have time to pause, look up and enjoy the architecture and see the street in a new way.

Join us as we pedestrianise one of Edinburgh most historic streets for a FREE family fun day of buskers, circus performers and incredible art installations on Sunday 9 June, 10am – 4pm.

Street art specialists Open Close will create a huge installation with natural turf covering much of the street road surface. They invite you to claim the space as your own and imagine what Candlemaker Row would be like if it was pedestrianised. How would you use it?

Chris Rutterford is one of Scotland’s leading mural artists and he will be displaying several pieces from his portfolio which largely focus on crowd scenes from iconic Scottish moments. He will also be painting live during the event.

There will be roaming circus performers from Think Circus who will be delivering ad-hoc workshops for any budding acrobats, clowns or jugglers who want to get involved!

A programme of six busking musicians will be playing throughout the day alongside the Bubble Whisperer to help bring the street to life.

We invite you to come and participate in this fantastic FREE event and a rare opportunity to see Candlemaker Row pedestrianised! There is no particular schedule for the day and no matter what time of the day you arrive you will be able to enjoy all of our outlined activities.

K-ART is a constituted team of local artists and community volunteers working together with the primary aim to reimagine and reinvigorate the village of Kelty in Fife through a range of arts projects large and small. Building on the success of Blackhall Square/Phase 1, the K-ART team are now nearing completion of Main Street/Phase 2.

GO-KARTING is part of the K-ART outreach programme in and around Fife. Artwork can be seen on Townhill Park public loo, Ward 5 garden Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline, Camdean Youth Hub, Rosyth and The Men's Shed in Glenrothes.

K-ARTISTS have also introduced augmented reality to some of the artwork on Kelty's Main Street using Artivive. See Elvis blowing you a kiss, a beating heart, falling petals and fluttering butterflies.

Artistic installations in the urban environment to promote waste awareness in Glasgow

Glasgow City Council have put in place an innovative way of recycling and we are collaborating with them to explore ways to work with artists to express this creatively. We are keen to involve artists to customise recycling facilities to explain to the public how important it is to dispose of waste responsibly.
There is an opportunity to use existing bins as a vehicle for artists installations which is being explored with GCC. Now we are looking at:
- Working with larger bins in Kelvingrove Park. We will be designing ways to nudge the public towards them, and ways to 'wrap' bins to communicate the importance of recycling using art as a medium rather than text or graphics. These installations will be temporary for the month of June.
- Exploring options to 'wrap' the new intelligent bins which are connected to internet to detect when filled and are moved around Glasgow depending on its location efficiency.

UK housing is shrinking and new homes are commonly too small to fit the day to day activities of occupant's lifestyles- the average size of a one-bedroom home is 45sqm. Recent Building Performance Evaluation studies have highlighted that the lack of space can impact on basic lifestyle needs such as having sufficient space to dry laundry, sort recycling or even entertain friends. A lack of adequate space for a household can have significant impacts on indoor air quality, mental health and family relationships. Whilst technical data has previously been gathered in a bid to lobby for healthier homes, the everyday impact needs to be recorded by a wider audience in a highly visual manner.

Flanked on either side by mountains and six lanes of freeway, the Madonna Inn is the rhinestone in the plastic crown of kitsch motels. Originally built in 1958, the Inn now showcases over one-hundred uniquely designed rooms that immerse the traveller in gemlike spaces of play and possibility. This publication explores the Madonna Inn as an architectural space glittering with the potential for plural realities and performed identities through the lens of souvenir postcards. Simulacra such as the neo-Neolithic, mock-Medieval, and faux-Flintstone are transformed into architectural chambers for immersive, hyperreal encounters that not only challenge the boundaries of the imagination, but the boundaries of good taste!

Across the globe, people are rediscovering the Commons as a way to describe the kinds of relationships between people, resources, and power that foster community resilience, ecological stewardship and democratised decision making. We imagine the tradition of ‘the shieling’ (Gaelic: àirigh) - the summer pastures where people used to graze cattle, living in huts or shelters on common land - as a context for imaginatively reclaiming the commons. This event explores the shieling not only as a material typology but as a motif for learning and education in context, reconnecting with the land and building community in real life.

Guest speaker Lesley Riddoch will reflect on what takes to make visions a reality, not in a far-off future, but in the places and spaces we occupy today; artist Julia Heslop will talk about the community project ‘Dwellbeing’ in Newcastle which uses the symbol of 'shieling' to widen imaginations about the future of an urban community.

The Event will transform Stockbridge Market Square into an informal playscape guided by professional playscape designers and play enthusiasts and will feature loose parts play, activities, ideas and printed Edinburgh playscape trail maps.

The Mobile Ploposal Machine will roam the city streets looking for people to generate ideas for spectacular new works of public art in Aberdeen. Using the self-contained, solar-powered, pop-up creative workshop hidden within the giant head, folk of all ages will be helped to create scale models of their ideas from a range of traditional, hands-on materials. These models will then be photographed and digitally manipulated to create posters which visualise the sculptures in various locations around the city. This project aims to engage citizens in the process of developing new visual, personal narratives in public spaces. These intuitive, playful, temporary interventions could perhaps function as a response to the seemingly opaque and arbitrary powers that shape our cities.

The event is part of the Look Again Festival in Aberdeen.

What?

Today's housing options can often feel restrictive, imagine if there was an alternative?

This engaging installation provokes a conversation about alternative ways of living. What could you get if you are willing to compromise?

Interact with activities to identify housing models you may be compatible with. This is an opportunity to question and reflect on the everyday ways we live and the potential housing typologies available.

Why?

To start a discussion on how housing design can be reorientated to foster a sense of community and create homes that are responsive to our ever-changing lifestyles. This includes investigating ideas around sharing resources whilst still retaining a sense of privacy and ownership.

It's hard to find a good balance of these things in housing today and this installation aims to investigate the demand for another housing type which is socially beneficial and cost effective.

We want to share our findings about alternative housing solutions and establish where design can add most value to improve the everyday for everyone.

The Ancient Greek province from which the term derives was associated with natural splendour and harmony inhabited by those without the pride and avarice that corrupted other regions.

The harmony we seek in our individual lives is deeply dependent on the built environment in which we live as a community which is in turn influenced by architects and designers as they grapple with our pressing need to walk more lightly on the earth.

Journeys in Design Scotland presents Arcadia: the Circular Economy of Construction, an exhibition series examining how we recycle our built environment.

Arcadia opens 8 June in the Olympia Shopping Arcade Kirkcaldy, part of the former Abbottshall Linen Works repurposed in pursuit of emerging design talent; it explores how this town and others in Scotland repurposes former Linen Buildings.

Architecture - to generate, develop and represent new sound and musical possibilities.

Our first project (ArchiFringe 2016 -Palimpsest) created a musical score and representation of and generated from the city. The second project (ArchiFringe 2017- Synethsthesia) was the sound and representation of a single building within the city. Our third (ArchiFringe 2018 S/M/L) created an imagined city, building and space, from a generating score.

For 2019, we will produce a sound installation piece, revisiting our previous work, re-recording and sampling in real life. A culmination of our ArchiFringe trilogy re-imagined in a constructed echo chamber.

Photographs taken by Dinda Fass whilst working for a construction company in Glasgow. Out on site taking the weekly progress photographs, Dinda also secretly made a body of work documenting the subtleties of light on concrete, the making-dos of construction workers, and the incidental / accidental collection of forms and shadows made by off-cut, discarded and unused materials. Exhibited for the first time Fass' pared down aesthetic combined with a keen observational eye will let you see a building site through new eyes.

At any given point in time, redundancy is present within our built environment. As our lifestyles, technologies, cultural values and systems of belief restlessly develop and change so too must our urban fabric.

Set against the growing spectre of climate change we must consider carefully the repeated pattern of demolition and rebuild. Instead, adaptive reuse should be our default choice in moving forward. For this year’s core programme ReTypes is a research and design project which invites participants to consider the adaptive repurposing of imagined existing buildings in order to explore intersectional identities and new architectural expression. We seek to explore how historically key typologies can be subject to re-use and transformational change within an evolving contemporary society.

Featuring newly commissioned work by Ann Nisbet Studio, Moxon, Studio Niro and You+Pea, the exhibition will also feature work from 2017’s New Typologies and 2018’s Frankentypes.

Perhaps the typology in question is nearing redundancy, with new alternative methods of engagement or existence required. Perhaps there are clues in the past for a given typology’s future..

In architecture and public life we now take certain typologies for granted; in terms of how they look, how they operate and how they are used. We recognise a house as being different from a library and a leisure centre as being distinct from a farm.

Struggles for space: Queering straight space: Thinking towards a queer architecture’ by Julius Gavroche, 2016

As part of of this year’s core programme, Queer Space is a research and design project which invites queer club producers based in Glasgow to imagine their ideal nightclub. Paired with local designers, together they will explore iterations of possible queered architectures.

Like a club night needing to fit within a pre-existing space, people who identify as queer are expected to conform to found, normative conditions. But what if we are able to set and design the conditions, and the space, on our own terms? To subvert the norm? We'll be exploring possible queered architectures with some of Glasgow's leading queer club producers.

‘Imperialism consolidated the mixture of cultures and identities on a global scale. But its worst and most paradoxical gift was to allow people to believe that they were only, mainly, exclusively, white, or Black, or Western, or Oriental.’ Edward Said

Culture and Imperialism in our globalised, post-colonial world, the people of colour struggle has become something intricate and multi-layered, its inherent paradox being the efforts to break free of social hierarchies it needs to participate in to be heard. In Real Life, people of colour have to face a society in the UK which is intrinsically racist, operating on systems and institutions that either totally disregard diversity and inclusivity, or take it at a surface level. In Real Life, architecture in the UK is not a divers profession, with an estimated 6% of Architects identifying as people of colour- around half of the proportion of the UK population. Our exhibition is an invitation to sit by an everyday architectural object, the table, deconstructed and multiplied to reflect the young voices of some of architecture’s few people of colour, shedding light on the stories of /other.

High roller private house builders accounted for 70% of new homes built in Scotland over the past decade - creating vast swathes of new development and shaping our built environment to their own ends. Meanwhile the disconnect between the aspirations of the design community and the reality of housing being built has never been starker.

IRL, urban decisions made 50 years ago are beginning to catch up with us. Life expectancy is dropping for the first time in a century as people live an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. The car has been woven into the everyday functions of our lives, and the built environment has stretched and expanded to accommodate it.

How do we up the ante and have a say in the way our houses are built? This exhibition will reveal the intersection between our health, the design of our built environment and the profit driven economy that underpins the way we build our homes as a society, while offering an opportunity for critical thinking to challenge the house rules on the table.

ScotPortfolio was conceived in 2015. It is an online platform and digital archive that celebrates and showcases the amazing ideas, drawings and projects emerging from the five Scottish architecture schools.

Our exhibition at this year’s Architecture Fringe highlights the reality that is Scotland's diaspora of talented graduates. We believe that, through it's great tradition of education Scotland has a very rich yet dispersed culture of architecture, which is yet to be fully discovered. The drawings on display explore how each exhibitor's time in such a culturally rich country has impacted their career.

Using drawing as a critical exercise, we hope to ignite a discourse surrounding identity and cultivation, questioning whether Scotland has the support to nurture a progressive culture of architecture. Why do so many students want to leave when they graduate, what do they take with them and what can they bring back?

Assisted Space [we're the operators] is an enquiry into electric fixtures coexistence as architecture and multi-purposeful machinery. The installation translates ubiquitous socket outlets, switches panels and 3-way socket adaptors into building and design material. Here build site is formed as e-architecture in development as collaborative with e-objects.

Through working with the materials the following elementary and deductive thoughts of the artist gave impetus and insight for further development, they are the following;

If every powered object had to have its own singular socket outlet, what form of architecture might be manifesting?

We live in an age in which we are exposed to more information, more news, more cultural influences, more points of view, more noise than ever before. Are we equipped to deal with this much saturation? In this exhibition, artist and architect Tamsin Ghislaine Cunningham explores the ways in which we seek refuge in a sometimes overwhelming world and the acts of filtering, muting and managing we are all engaged in as we create our own boundaries and borderlines around the quiet refuges that help sustain us.

When so much of both our physical built environments and our online space are designed around stimulation and the capturing of our limited attention, where does space exist for retreat? And as the world gets ever noisier, how can we design quiet and expansiveness into the fabric of our lives?

Our proposal for the Architecture Fringe 2019 will put 'Architecture' on the conversation menu. Dress for the Weather enjoy engaging non-architect audiences and propose to enhance the social and civic platform of Architecture Fringe 2019 with the 'Architecture Bar' serving as platform for a Conversation Menu. We'll aim to break down the big ideas behind In Real Life and key exhibitions and projects behind the fringe. But it's hard to come at it cold! Like the waiter in Monty Python's sketch we're offering to 'get people started'.

An exhibition and daytime event within the Lighthouse Centre of Design and Architecture that shares insight and experience from women who worked within the built environment during the mid-20th Century.

This exhibition is focused around a series of artefacts or mementos - gifted by eight previous participants from the wider Voices of Experience project. The objects from their working life are accompanied by text and sound clips to provide context and deeper understanding of the objects and their significance.

To accompany the exhibition the Voices of Experience team will host an informal afternoon tea which brings some of the exhibition participants together in conversation to discuss their selected artefact and its significance. They will be invited to ask one another questions and invite contributions from those attending.

The exhibition, and associated daytime event, seek to shine a light on women's work and influence within the built environment.

St Peter's Seminary, arguably the magnum opus of its architects Andy MacMillian and Isi Metzstein, has found cult status as an abandoned building frequented by architects, vandals, photographers, and graffiti artists. It lies on the fringes of space and time, of reality, a dangerous hulk that determined visitors choose to enter at their own risk.

St Peter's is often touted as an architectural masterpiece. But is that really what makes this place significant? The Seminary, recalcitrant in the face of its designers, its owners, its prospective saviours or destroyers seems determined to continue on its crumbling path 30 years after the lights were switched off for the last time.

Archaeologist Joss Durnan asks what fate this place demands and if, perhaps, its inevitable succumbing to ruination is the fate we deserve of it.

There is a conscious move to digital media to minimise the generation of paper in the everyday in all offices of all industries. Despite this there is still some way to go to be completely paperless in architecture.
As an architectural office, we propose to collate the paper we have generated over the period of a month and display this in artistic forms to bring awareness of the waste we generate from this material alone.
This installation will be complemented by an exhibition of an architectural projects life cycle and the waste it generates which is the basis of our Garbage Barge Talk on 19th June.

The way we work has significantly changed in the past 100 years. From skyscrapers and cubicle farms to home-working and technology driven hot desks.

But what will a future workplace look like? Will it be entirely wireless? Will it be more like home or a digital AI factory? Will it meet either people's or robots' needs? Will work lives be better - or frustrating and miserable?

Our project is an event (with drinks!) to promote debate on The Future Workplace. We will show a thirty-minute video that combines a history of the transformation of office design with behavioural science research on productivity and well-being in the workplace. Industry experts will then share their ideas in a provocative panel discussion.

We will get the guests' opinions and publish our findings to raise awareness of the effect the future workplace will have on the end user: the people in it.

Patrick Geddes has been cited as inspirational by generations of architects and planners. George Pepler & Patrick Abercrombie were instrumental in shaping post-war Britain but were they really Geddesian? How much of the modernist movement stemmed from Geddes work and would the father of modern planning have loved what was done in his name? Following an initial exploration of the context and influence of Geddes, Dr Alistair Fair (Lecturer in Architectural History and Director of Research, Edinburgh School of Architecture & Landscape Architecture (ESALA)) will explore various realised and proposed ‘modernist’ interventions within Edinburgh’s city centre. Participants will have the opportunity to interrogate original designs. After a light lunch, Alastair and colleagues will lead the group through public space interventions of differing generations in the Royal Mile area.

Sculpted dance moves and manoeuvres are made accessible and designed to flow seamlessly by the class teacher. His formula is both evolved and immediate. We live in a city, which you can walk around. However, in the age of globalisation and the internet, we are losing connection in the neighbourhood and our connection relies on networks. Memories and history of individuals are detached from a land. As a result, we are losing familiar landscapes around us which affect the quality of our living environment. The academic study creates archives of buildings but they never tell why neighbours need the buildings. Stories and narratives are the keys to fill the gap between archives and collective memories. Working with a writer, the project tries to bring back those memories, which belong to a land. Paper is our material which can produce books, archives and architecture.

Erratic Drift is a series of four public actions/performances in Glasgow, which aim to re-frame the city as a more-than-human environment, focussing on the relationship between the (human)built and the geological. Erratic Drift co-opts the Situationist practice of the drift (or d̩rive) to unsettle human-centric perceptions of the built environment and expand human understandings of time. How might travelling with, or as, rocks change our perspectives on the built environment? How might navigating a city according to the geological formations that underpin it, rather than the superimposed urban plan, shift our perceptions of the city's fabric and duration? Erratic Drift will be performed by artist-researchers Minty Donald and Nick Millar over four days. Performance scores for each action will be available at the Architecture Fringe hub. There's a famous clinical study, carried out in the 1970s, where rats in wee cages, given the choice of water or heroin-laced water became quickly addicted, but others in a Rat Park, provided with the same choice but with wheels to run and families to raise, ignored the drugs and led clean rat lives. This shone a light on the importance of environment and the central role that community and purpose plays in our animal lives.

The scourge of inequality is the greatest urban challenge we face. The idea of a City of Wellbeing might seem, at first, to be a nice, gentrified aim for the city's well-appointed neighbourhoods but becomes more radical when applied throughout.

The work of writer and Edinburgh GP Peter Dorward, in The Human Kind, expands on how intertwined pain, addiction and environment are.

Peter and architect Malcolm Fraser will discuss its application to our city.

This project comes from a working collaboration with Bellastock, an association created to face the lack of practical experiment in architectural education by proposing a building festival to develop an ephemeral free-city-space.

Participants are facing a material they need to fully consider to design and build their project. How we use materials within the design allows to re-focus on the life cycle of materials, the relation to global sustainability, health, local resources and circular economy; as many components to build for the future. It also develops a sense of teamwork by exchanging skills, learning by doing and sharing.

This pre-festival event aims to explain the festival but also to develop an open discussion about alternative architectural practices such as live build by considering the key role that architects can play in the development, and preservation of cities and rural territories using principles focused on daily improvement and sustainable techniques.

Each presenter is allowed 20 images shown for 20 seconds each - 6 minutes 40 seconds run time- before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show. Chill during the interval and afterwards, enjoy the buzz of creativity.

If you are not satisfied with the world as it is, change it' is what we, Year Five Architecture students at the University of Strathclyde, were told at the beginning of our final year. In our exhibition The Other Tradition we present a selection of responses to that provocation.

We have chosen to address the issues of today we find the most pressing. Basing our heterotopic visions on research grounded in existing social, cultural and political landscapes, we have aimed to ensure our proposals are realistic, whilst also remembering that this may have been our last chance to fully express our individuality in an uninhibited way.

This exhibition can be considered an amalgamation of viewpoints on the world, projected into an idealistic reality and echoing the past and present, as well as give an insight into the minds of students about to enter the professional field.

Dictating to the Estate is a play about the refurbishment of Grenfell Tower made entirely from contemporary documents such as emails, blogs and council minutes. The play places the refurbishment of the tower in the context of austerity and estate regeneration, and re-enacts the efforts of local housing activists such as the Grenfell Action Group to resist these policies and ensure the improvement works to the Tower were safely carried out. The story ends six months before the fire, with Grenfell Action Group’s chillingly prescient observation that only a “major catastrophe … with serious loss of life” would bring their landlords to account. It was first performed at the Playground Theatre January 2019. For this Architecture Fringe event playwright Nathaniel McBride offers a reading from the play, describes the process of researching and writing it, and reflects on documentary theatre as a possible mode of political education.

This lecture reflects on the difficulty of enrolling the Grenfell Tower fire within particular political and governmental programmes. Beyond the headlines and PMQ’s, it does so with a focus on the way that this event has been called upon as a prompt for recent programmes of regulatory reform, specifically Dame Judith Hackitt’s Building a Safer Future. Through a close study of documentary evidence concerning the fire, it suggests ways in which the construction of Grenfell Tower, and the way that fire moved through it, would seem to argue against Dame Hackitt’s report. As in the associated exhibition (see Grenfell: Object Lessons) the lecture will suggest that buildings, and the events that befall them, have the capacity to ‘object’ to particular ways of thinking about them, to offer their own lessons. It will use that evidence to reflect on the particular ‘actancy’ of fire, suggesting – beyond the specifics of the Grenfell case – that this phenomenon resists calls to individuate risk and responsibility, asking us to think of the design of the built environment as a ‘technology of solidarity’.

Terrazzo is a composite material, of aggregate and cementitious binder. It has the ability to unite found and forgotten materials into a cohesive whole, it can be polished to find unexpected beauty in the seemingly dull.

This workshop will teach you the basic skills of working with terrazzo. We will build formwork, collect aggregate, experiment with mixes and cast a tile. This will then be polished and oiled and each participate will have a tile to take home.

In real life, building is not so hard, especially with a collective. The project aims to build a temporary pavilion out of prepared components, using paper chains to create boundaries and canopies. With the collective comprising of different people everyday, the pavilion will change form and organisation, an organic space growing process. Simply put, we are showing how space making and place making can be created with simple components. So people of all ages can join. And on the last day, join us for a picnic in the meadows in the newly build pavilion.

A number of helium balloons are balanced by various weights of string to achieve something like neutral buoyancy. The affect is odd. The objects respond to the movements of people and currents of movement in the air. (You may find one sneaks up on you.) This work seems to loosely model curious interactions of matter we don’t normally see. It feels a bit like floating in space, or under the waves.

Similar to a work mounted at Architecture Fringe 2018 at DOK Artist Space, Edinburgh. Thorpe uses unassuming materials such as thread, paper, rubbish, or drips of paint, to play with space, light, and perception of the material world.

What lessons should architects, and architectural students, learn from the Grenfell Tower fire? During the past semester 22 undergraduate architecture students at the University of Edinburgh have been asking themselves this question. They have been following phase 1 of the public inquiry, studying evidence submitted by core participants; planning statements, warrant drawings, manufacturer’s instructions, test results, testimonies of survivors, commemoration hearings from the bereaved, reports from the attending fire-fighters. In dialogue with expert witnesses and fire-safety engineers they have sought to understand the construction of Grenfell Tower, and the way it reacted to fire, as an ‘object lesson’ for future designers. For this exhibition, each student offers a spatial representation of one item of evidence as a means to share their reflections with the broader professional community.

Argyll Street, Dunoon is the main street that runs through this Scottish seaside. The town is located on the river Clyde, 30 miles west of Glasgow. Argyll street has evolved with the changing fortunes of Dunoon. It has been the thoroughfare for Victorian tourists arriving from Glasgow by paddle steamer and a place of celebration and pipe-bands during the annual Cowal Gathering. Between 1961 - 1992, Argyll Street shops catered for 700 American navy personnel, who lived in the surrounding area whilst working at the Holy Loch nuclear submarine base. Shops along Argyll Street have opened and closed in response to the changing fortunes of the town. Today more than ever, small, rural towns are fighting to retain their high streets. Tapping into the stories of people who have managed shops across two centuries, this high-street long exhibition uses shop windows and signage to share the stories of people, enterprise and place.

Livi Modern is a multimedia exhibition by four artists - Simon Montgomery, Nicholas Devison, Sam Vettese and Dawn McDowell - who have created artwork inspired by their shared interest in the surviving modernism of Livingston's new town. Over 50 years since its founding, Livingston's modern identity characterised by a network of Radburn planned housing schemes, set in an expansive rolling landscape has been diffused. Yet, it still expresses a sense of place, despite all the contradictions of today's real life cannibalising of its modernist past. What remains of Scotland's fourth new town has been captured and transformed by each artist's interpretation of its brutalist buildings and spaces. When history meets with its actors, that is its events that tend to reshape its flow, sets aside the tiny neglected personal stories. It would hence, not be stopped neither by the pain nor the suffering of which constantly narrates. However, it would be for those human stories and their rarely mentioned trials in which the truth of real life lies. In the words of Italo Calvino; At times all we need is a brief glimpse, an opening in the midst of an incongruous landscape, a glint of lights in the fog, the dialogue of two passers-by meeting in the crowd, and I think, that setting out from there, I will pull together piece by piece, the perfect city made of fragments mixed with the rest, of instants separated by intervals, of signals one sends out, not knowing who receives them.

In 1976 the Art and the Built Environment Project was established by Eileen Adams and Colin Ward with the intention of establishing the study of the built environment as a normal part of the secondary school curriculum. The project was an attempt to create a situation where the skills to analyse, interpret and manipulate the built environment were accessible to everyone, not merely the articulate minority of people with architecture degrees.

Together, using the study methods developed by the Art and the Built Environment Project we will generate and collate our own information based upon our observations and experiences to create a unique map of Garnethill. Instead of being the collectors and recorders of pre-existing information, we will be working as our own sources, interpreters and critics.

Crucially, this class will not necessarily be about the production of maps, but about understanding the qualities of the built environment through the process of mapping activities.

Glasgow based artist Ally Wallace makes work about architecture and during the past 12 months has made frequent visits to Netherdale Stadium, Galashiels, to make drawings, sculpture and video about the A-listed, Brutalist concrete grandstand there.

Netherdale is the home of Gala Fairydean Rovers Football Club and Ally's completed artworks will be exhibited as an installation in the club's Board Room at the stadium. In addition to seeing the exhibition, visitors will have an opportunity to look around the grandstand's interior and exterior.

The building was designed by British Modernist architect Peter Womersley and was completed in 1964. Current restorative work being carried out on the stand has meant that the seating area is temporarily inaccessible to visitors but the building's overall dynamic form can be viewed from all around.

Waypoints is a site-specific visual art installation at Machrihanish Airbase, a former military facility near Campbeltown, Argyll. The artwork by Rhona Taylor responds to the history, location, architecture and repurposing of the site.

The airbase, which was built in the 1940s, was one of Britain's busiest frontline airfields during the Second World War. It was later developed into a key strategic site that was used throughout the Cold War, and more recently by the RAF and US Navy.

The local community bought the whole site for £1 in 2012, with the aim of repurposing it for the benefit of the local area. It is now run as a thriving business and industrial centre by Machrihanish Airbase Community Company, who have kindly supported Waypoints for the Architecture Fringe.

Our purpose is not just to increase the built environment expertise within local government, it's to transform the status of public service, and support those working within it to lead the way. To do this we have created a unique professional placement programme specifically designed for built environment professionals and their public authority hosts. We offer professionals currently in the private sector an attractive route into working for the public sector whilst also celebrating and capturing leading industry knowledge and sharing it across the wider sector.

WHY WE DO IT

We believe good public planning is fundamental for creating a built environment that is spatially, socially and economically inclusive and sustainable. Being a public planner - by which we mean any built environment expert working in the public sector - can be an extraordinarily rewarding and worthwhile job. No role is more influential in shaping the world around us for the public good. But there is not enough recognition of the value of public planning or its potential to do more to tackle the grand challenges facing society.

HOW WE DO IT

We are a not-for-profit, or 'beyond profit' organisation. We currently provide one main service, our placement programme that Authorities pay a Membership Fee to take part in. In addition, we receive donations from Partners and Supporters. These donations help cover our core costs of running the company. This allows us to keep our fees charged to the public sector affordable and means we don't have to ask Associates to pay to take part, helping to ensure we can attract the most diverse candidates we can

The space is being established as a collaborative project by Lee Ivett and Duncan Blackmore as a place of residency and civic agency that a community of people can use to test social, cultural, creative and economic activity.

Over two days we will create two events that will launch the space. The first will be a dinner with local community members and stakeholders with an open discussion the following evening to discuss and debate the potential role of Kiosk within its context.

Farm Lunch with Architects Kitchen as part of the Architectural Fringe 2019, Guardswell Farm and Building Workshop (our Guardswell architects) are teaming up to run a couple of different events.

Building Workshop run lovely, serene pop up dinners in Humpty House - their home/architectural office - each of which raises money for a different charity. We have teamed up with them to run a Farm Lunch together at Guardswell Farm.

In true Guardswell Farm Lunch style, the majority of the ingredients will be sourced from the farm itself - with anything extra being procured from local producers and growers. A family style, long table event - with a chance to explore the farm before and after, as well as a farm tour for those who wish.

Architectural and Design books will be available to peruse, as well as some information about the Steading building itself and the work that went into it becoming as it is now.

Building Workshop will speak for a short period of time to give you a little insight into their progressive, rural, architecture and design practice.

From reams of paper used for sketch proposals, through construction waste on site when the finalised design is being erected, to waste generated by the end users, a mass of waste is generated throughout the lifetime of a project.

When waste is circling the oceans on giant barges because there's no place to process the waste, the term "sustainable architecture" needs to extend further into the design, construction and use of a building and the wider built environment.

How can design teams seek to reduce their personal waste when designing, while also lessening construction waste or the quantity of materials used on a project? Would this change how we design?

A visual presentation of a project's life cycle and the waste it generates will be followed by a conversation with a guest panel of experts with the aim to generate ideas on how this process can be reformed.

'Living Streets’ and Glasgow Council City Regeneration group are supporting Garnetbank Primary School to have a street closure for play and highlighting sustainability issues.

Garnetbank Primary School, a recent winner of the Nancy Ovens national play award, will host a day of events taking Play with a Garden Theme out onto the street for a day in addition to our ususal summer fayre stalls encouraging recycling and reusing.

With the support of Living Streets, we will have PEEK play on the street for games and the schools Citizenship Committees running stalls to highlight our work with SEPA, Sowing Seeds and UNICEF on air pollution. Our schools own Architecture for Kids Club will host an exhibition of their work. This is a community event and are hoping to get support from local community growers including FROGGS (Friends of Garnethill Green Spaces) in order to make Garnetbank Primary School greener.

Tenements Talking is a walking workshop about the change of Glasgow's tenements over the years. During the workshop, we will walk among the tenements as living monuments of the change of Glasgow's urban scene within the last century. We will discuss tenements, stories starting from their construction and moving to the rent strikes which took place in Glasgow tenement neighbourhoods and spread over the UK. We will also discuss tenements adaptation to modern life and technology over the years. The workshop is designed as an active discussion platform rather than a tour.

Throughout 2019 The Common Guild presents an ambitious series of talks that generates discussion around the needs, expectations and possibilities of the space for art today. The talks take place in a range of venues, new and old, and the series includes artists, architects, curators and others.

Jamie Fobert is a London-based architect and designer. Since establishing Jamie Fobert Architects in 1996, he has consistently produced innovative and inspiring architecture in projects ranging from individual houses to significant public buildings for the arts. During this time, the practice has won a number of major public commissions for cultural organisations including the new Tate St Ives, extensions to Kettle's Yard Gallery and Charleston House, and most recently, The National Portrait Gallery. The Mackintosh Church in Queen's Cross is one of Glasgow's hidden architectural gems. Built in 1898, it is the only church designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Door handles, old towers, mechanical clocks, smoking chimneys, cornices, breathtaking domes, door steps, tiny windows, arcades, exquisite niches, timber shutters, corinthian capitals, marble angels all shimmer and wait to be rediscovered, united by their grace and complexity. The paintings show the layered up elements of urban fabric and the way they melt into a coherent image in order to capture the character of the vibrant Florentine life; studies of details and objects with particular architectural significance further reveal the exquisiteness of the urban fabric while capturing the diverse reality of the Florentine every day life.

This series of art pieces are a result of a research undertaken in 2018 as a part of a travel scholarship funded by the RSA.

To conclude our month-long exhibition and open studio Backstage Production, Theatrum Mundi is hosting a long weekend of discussions, performances, readings and screenings that will reveal the invisible ways that artists’ homes underpin the cultural life of the city.

Alongside our research into different approaches to the provision of infrastructures for culture, we are bringing together artists, musicians, performers, writers, curators and researchers to discuss home as a cultural infrastructure. We will be talking about kitchen tables, spare bedrooms, home offices, home studios, garages, sheds, bedrooms, bathrooms and gardens, as well as the social, political, historical, geographical and urban conditions around them and how work is made or influenced by them. We aim to share some homemade work and consider what happens when a place of dwelling becomes a workplace or home becomes the work itself.

We aim to invite practitioners from across different creative fields to discuss their relationship with the domestic in their practice. Through the screenings and discussions, we would also like to look at historical examples from Virginia Woolf’s room of her own, through Margaret Tait’s films set around her home in the Orkney’s, to Derek Jarman’s cottage and garden in Dungeness. We are likely to also do some future gazing and consider whether home as a cultural infrastructure is going to become more prominent in the future. Should growing cities such as Glasgow pay more attention to these spaces?

Theatrum Mundi is an independent research centre, operating on a charitable basis. Our aim is to help expand the crafts of city-making - from architecture and urban design to engineering, planning, and grassroots activism. We do this by leading research and creative projects that stimulate collaboration between urbanists and a broad range of other practitioners including artists, writers, filmmakers, choreographers, and musicians. Based in London, our programme extends to Edinburgh, Paris, Buenos Aires, Marseille, Beirut, Venice, and now Glasgow.

Friends of Garnethill Green Spaces (FROGGS) will be firing up the community Bread Oven on 22nd June, at Interfest celebrations for Refugee Week. Real life diversity will be celebrated with wood fired bread recipes from different cultures. Inspired by the ancient architecture and custom of community bread ovens, GSA student, Eleonora Jaroszynska's design was adopted by FROGGS.

The build was realised as a unique collaboration between members of the community, art and architecture students and staff from GSA and Strathclyde University. The structure incorporates materials salvaged from the 2014 fire at the GSA Mackintosh building. The symbology of bread rising from the ashes of destruction was not lost, though poignantly highlighted by the devastation of the 2018 fire.

The resilient community launched their new architectural structure in the first week of January 2019, with a firing and sharing of pizzas, bread and a good blether. In real life, real food cooked in the fire of community spirit, warms the soul.

Hammocks and Highlanders employs a new building by Victoria Caubet celebrating the connection between Highland cattle & their keepers. It adds to a farm infrastructure that purposefully aims to magnetise energy into an area that has lost much over the recent past. Yet these animals remain - rooted in their locale and to their genetic function. They possess a glamour compelling even to those with little or no experience of animals or agriculture. Why is this?

The answering narrative, ancient and familiar, will be expressed at this Architectural Fringe Festival event by making physical contact with these primeval beasts, engaging in stories told round a central hearth, absorbing a sound frieze of cattle keepers voices. Finally, participants enjoy the live experience of a multi-purpose farm building, when they turn in for the night in hammocks slung in the building that, at other seasons, is used to shelter the animals.

Members of the Circus artists' collective will guide you on a route through Inverness connecting spaces as well as share some of its public art and hidden places of interest. Taking a walk through the everyday built environment using a lens of discovery, the routine and ordinary of our surroundings can be explored in an alternative way. Examining civic spaces and public art in relation to its architectural environs, this guided walk will lead to discussion and a critique of everyday life within the city, as well as unearthing new spaces for contemplation and possible intervention. Circus invites participants to share in our wayfinding to create a sense of collective responsibility and collaborative endeavour. Your Space | Take Notice aims to encourage people to observe and be more critical of their surroundings. What kind of environments do we enjoy and why do we enjoy them? Which areas of our city feel spiritless and how does this affect us?

By tactfully placing notices around the city that host a series of abstract imagery that relate to their varying locations, on lookers are asked to confront the physical reality of their surroundings. Thoughts and ideas generated from this can then be shared through the non-physical public space of the internet, via a QR code. In this case the digital realm is used as an accessory to explore the metropolitan world in a more meaningful way.

These notices invite people to look around, look up, look down, and absorb a multiplicity of spaces. Ultimately the desire of this process is to stimulate the question 'how does this space make me feel?'
