Abstract or description
Conference paper in the form of a report on the UK's response to the Coronavirus-19 pandemic for the European Institute of Social Security on 25th September 2020. The focus of the report was on labour market, tax, and social protection measures including the Coronavirus Job Protection Scheme and other measures (wage subsidies, loans, etc) to assist businesses.
Specific topics/themes included: the role of work and a job as a form of 'welfare'; the UK's labour market and social protection floor at the start of the pandemic; changes to the minimum wage floor from 1/4/20; key measures like the CJRS, SEISS, and freeze of repossessions for non-payment of rent; and issues like lay-offs and redundancy measures; advice services, and future challenges for financing measures and new schemes. A co-presenter, Prof. Neville Harris, provided a report on UK Social Security measures, and schemes dealing with specific contingencies.
