Abstract or description
OMG I love common culture !!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️ was made in response to an American internet celebrity who in order to capitalise on the intimate relationship he had built with his online followers, had trademarked the name ‘Common Culture’ to brand, promote and sell a range of products.
For this solo exhibition at Die Raum (Berlin, Germany) the gallery was closed and the outside of the space converted into a Common Culture shopfront, turning a cultural space into what appears to be a commercial space. Stickers were produced, using comments from the online posts of the celebrity’s fan base, and placed onto the shop front as a visual signifier of the way in which stickers are used to draw attention to bands, brands, ideas or political messages or movements across contemporary city spaces. A new video work, appropriating YouTube footage of the internet celebrity, was accessible via the web domain www.commonculture.store indicated on the shopfront. The research explores how the aesthetics, interactions and transactional intimacy built by internet personalities are ruthlessly deployed to convert followers into consumers.
For the opening night only, the space was open and the audience were presented with the video that was available via the weblink and a range of t-shirts using some of the graphic sticker designs.
