Abstract or description

This chapter presents an overview of key artists, movements and important influences that have inspired and shaped the history of visual music. It introduces historical developments including colour organs, lumia, animation and optical soundtracks and phenomena such as cymatics and synaesthesia, which all play their own part in a richly coloured history. Recent developments, including the rise of academic study and contemporary artists active in this area, are also discussed. Each subject is touched on briefly to give the reader a quick overview of many relevant topics so those of interest can be identified and followed up for further study.
