Abstract or description
Visual music is an artistic genre that applies musical thinking to the production of imagery. Contemporary visual music performances and artworks incorporate both moving imagery and music and seek to create a cohesive multimedia experience. The presentation draws on the works of artists including John Whitney, Maura McDonnel and Joao Pedro Oliveira. It introduces the genre then examines techniques that are used to transfer qualities bi-directionally between sound and image. These include the techniques proposed by Hyde (2012) known as material transference and compositional thinking. It also explores the continuum between fixed media and algorithmic composition. Examples of current creative works and techniques will be used to illustrate these theoretical approaches that can be applied creatively in composition and production. Electronic Visual Music' is proposed as a new title for this contemporary practice to distinguish it from traditional techniques using film stock.
