Abstract or description
Paradigm shifts in time extend their influence across philosophy,
literature, architecture, and art. In particular, the acceptance of this shift
in thinking in contemporary ceramics has been made more concrete by
postmodernism. This section presents a selection of diverse contemporary
ceramics from 2010 onwards that use performance, video, interactions
and audience participation to both shape and extend the meaning of
their works. The concept of pluralism, where complex and multiple
modalities coexist, has given contemporary ceramics an additional
function of mixing and deconstructing media while realizing concepts
that are open to interpretation. Throughout the entire process of creating
ceramics, from the planned methodology and approach, to the ideas
and materialization of the vision, there is a constant experimentation
and challenge to expand the artist's experience and concepts. The field
of pluralized contemporary ceramics, with its constant questioning of
identity, presents us with future discourses and issues as complex as the
environment of contemporary society itself.
This work reflects the post-industrialization changes that occurred in Stoke-on-Trent, a ceramics hub with a rich history and a global reputation in the ceramic manufacturing industry that has experienced a rapid decline over the course of decades. By repurposing surplus ceramics collected from film and ceramic production sites, the work starkly reveals the socio-economic impact of globalization on people, places, and traditional industries. In particular, the work focuses on the complex knowledge systems in ceramic manufacturing companies and the downsizing of skilled workforces by these companies as they gradually incorporate advanced technology and outsourcing strategies. The artist emphasises the types of human know-how that are often overlooked in the rapidly disappearing labour culture, questioning the relationship between value and functionality. This work is not intended to stir up nostalgia for past glories, but rather it is to raise. awareness of the sustainability of the intangible cultural assets that are increasingly in danger of disappearing and the industrial heritage that has supported the local populace of Stoke-on-Trent for over 300 years.
