Abstract or description

Wirksworth Festival began in 1979, and is an arts trail, which includes exhibitions in houses and shops around the town. Wirksworth is a Derbyshire market town rich in history, and the 2011 Festival commissioned a series of creative and artistic interventions across the town, drawing attention to the sites and particularity of the town and its people.

Anna Francis was commissioned by the festival to create an intervention in a shop window on the high street. Francis was invited particularly to look at the unique situation of this rural high street, where only one of the shops was not independent, at a crucial time in the high streets history, as a large supermarket was set to be built just on the outskirts of the town, which will no doubt have an impact on the shops on the high street.
Francis intervention, Bland Shop, is part of a series of work drawing attention to the plight of Independent Shopkeepers.

The installation used a generic font, to create a brand identity similar to supermarket own brands, plus a QR code, which would take you to a logo 'SHOP INDEPENDENT.
