#ThankYou to the Islam Channel for hosting James Treadwell and I. A great show where we had the chance to discuss politics, policing and conflict in a little more detail. #PublicEngagement events like these are so important for #academics. They enable access to #communities far beyond d our reach but who are #affected by the #research and #academic areas we work in. Looking forward to doing more of these. Excuse the poor quality picture, the chef in the kitchen smoked out the studio! But the chicken was delicious!!!!! The Department of the Interior just released it's "Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative Investigative Report, Vol. II." This is a tremendously important step at truly understanding the impact that colonial, assimilationist education, specifically in Federal Indian Boarding Schools, has had on Indigenous communities in the United States then and now. 🏫 When I researched the U.S. Federal Indian Boarding School system for my dissertation in 2015-2016, there was hardly any information available that would allow insights into the realities in these schools. The archival documentation appeared to be lacking just that type of data. Meanwhile, survivor reports kept coming out, alleging what has now been found and published in this report. 📄 I am glad to see that this topic has received momentum at the federal level and is receiving the transparency it deserves. For more information, here is a New York Times article (gift link) and I will link the report in the comments. 📰 #FederalIndianBoardingSchoolInitiative #DOI #transparency

Students are non-violently leading the way! Humanity needs fresh ideas and a new type of politics, representing mankind as a whole instead of fragmented political interests! We have to grow together in order to urgently address the issues that impact all of us like conflict, climate change, inequality and forced migration together. This we can only do without any dominance, as equals. Collectively in Solidarity. www.convergence.ngo & www.pax.ngo

At the encampment at George Washington University, we see social justice and spirituality intertwine. Friday prayers (Jummah) being held inside the encampment. Next to prayer are a series of stalls offering free food to student protestors, and another offering volunteer medical care. This is SO reminiscent to Tahrir Square in Egypt in 2011. Truly, these students are our future. May they usher in a more just world.

Conflict in schools (be it teacher-student, student-student, parent-teacher) has had negative impact on student performance and relationships. In dealing with the situation, universities students adopt different conflict approaches geared toward limiting the chances of ending up depressed. These approaches will enlighten you more on student understanding of conflict. Consult the recent work published by Wem' Afrika to have a comprehensive knowledge on Mitigating Conflict in Schools: Higher Institutions.

When you're writing your personal statement and/or school specific essays, we urge you to keep in mind that *timing matters.* Eighty percent of the experiences you share should be from adulthood (college and beyond). Twenty percent can be from before then if they established foundational skills or led to evolutions in perspective. For example, if you taught wilderness first aid as an Eagle Scout or participated in a Books Behind Bars program back in high school that changed your thoughts on the American prison system, that's worth noting.
