A huge #ThankYou to West Mercia Police for hosting us this evening at Wellington Police Station. We engaged with local communities as part of Staffordshire Universitys #ConnectedCommunities initiative. The discussions were #brilliant, couched against the #Manchester Airport Incident. No punches were pulled and some heartfelt contributions by those who attended. A perfect example of #grassroots community engagement should be done. PCC reaffirms commitment to Neighbourhood Policing following first scrutiny meeting 👮♂️ 👮♀ As Commissioner, Matt is responsible for holding the Chief Constable to account for maintaining an efficient and effective police service in Cleveland. One of the ways he undertakes this crucial role is through monthly scrutiny meetings, which provide Chief Officers the opportunity to give the Commissioner a detailed account of progress on a specific topic, enabling Matt to identify whether there are any areas of further improvement and assurance.🤔 The topic of Matt’s first scrutiny meeting held on June 11th focused on Neighbourhood Policing and covered areas such as community engagement, resources and deployment of neighbourhood teams, challenges and risks faced by officers and training opportunities available to them. The meeting’s findings will help inform Matt’s Police and Crime Plan which will aim to meet the needs of Cleveland’s communities over the next four years. The Southwark Policing Oversight Board has launched to help build confidence in local policing. The independent body will provide oversight on Central South Borough Command’s Police Trust and Confidence Improvement Plan. Cllr Natasha Ennin, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Neighbourhoods, said: “I’m very happy to be here to launch the Policing Oversight Board. We know crime and antisocial behaviour are among the biggest concerns of our residents and the relationship between many people living in Southwark and the Met has taken a hit in recent years. "I’m pleased that Borough Commander Adjei-Addoh and his colleagues are taking positive steps to address the very real issues people have. We all want a safer Southwark and I’m confident the board will play a huge role in achieving that.” https://orlo.uk/8XT6S

My vlog on ‘Community policing’ (CP) a vital approach to democratize policing, fostering a collaborative relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve. By engaging with citizens, listening to their concerns, and addressing their needs, police can build trust, legitimacy, and support. This leads to more effective law enforcement, as communities become active partners in preventing and solving crimes. CP encompasses various strategies, including: 1. Community engagement and outreach 2. Neighborhood policing and patrols 3. Problem-oriented policing 4. Partnerships with local organizations and stakeholders 5. Transparency and accountability By adopting CP principles, law enforcement agencies can: 1. Enhance public trust and confidence 2. Improve communication and cooperation 3. Reduce crime and fear of crime 4. Promote inclusive and equitable policing practices 5. Strengthen community cohesion and social bonds

I want to share this insightful article on the improvement of community-policing relations in challenging environments in #Kenya. It closely aligns with the findings from my master’s thesis, where I observed similar improvements in #police conduct in #postconflict #Colombia. Definitely worth reading! #police #lawenforcement #peace #Conflict
In contexts of high insecurity and mistrust in the police, how and why do local residents still choose to collaborate with the police, and what is the role of community policing in such considerations? I study these questions in urban Kenya with Patrick Mutahi, PhD and Emma Elfversson. We find that relationships between communities and police can be improved, even in challenging environments. Our analysis highlights the significance of everyday interactions and community policing structures in fostering trust and gradually improving police-community relations. Community Policing: A Double-Edged Sword? My first encounter with Kisii’s Zungu Zungu community policing group left me fearful. A minor mistake at work led to a colleague warning me that they could intervene in intimidating ways. At the time, I knew nothing about the group, and the idea of such unchecked authority was unsettling. Later, I witnessed their potential for good when they raided a house involved in illicit drugs, restoring safety to the neighborhood. This duality—intimidation versus justice—raises critical questions about community policing programs. To truly serve their purpose, these initiatives must be transparent, fair, and accountable. Public awareness and oversight can help ensure they protect, not intimidate, the communities they serve.
