This chapter forms part of a larger work with eleven other contributed chapters, all based on papers given at the W.G. Hart Conference at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London University between 29th June and 1st July 2004. The conference debated issues around migration and asylum themes. The book is the sister work to 'Migration, Diasporas and Legal Systems in Europe'. The author's contribution was based on the second paper at the conference, and is chapter 5 of the book. It examines trends in the development of the welfare regime that supports migrants, and new developments shaping the system. As well domestic UK law consideration is given to the impact of EU Law and ECHR/human rights law.
