Abstract or description

The paper was given as one of the speakers in the Oxford University Trinity speakers in 2008 (as the second speaker that year). The theme of the 2008 series was 'The Agency of Borders: Perspectives on UK Immigration Policy & Practice’. The organisers were the Oxford University ESRC Centre on Migration Policy and Society. The paper's main focus was on the way that legislative barriers to residence and residence-related social rights of migrants and their family members have been constructed around concepts of 'the family', and what is, or is not, a family member.
