Abstract or description

Visual music is an artistic genre that applies musical strategies in the production of visual imagery. Contemporary electronic visual music performances and artworks also employ abstraction to facilitate expression and create cohesion between sound and image. These, and other characteristics, will be discussed with reference to theory and examples of contemporary artworks by the author and other artists. This will show how transferring qualities bi-directionally between two mediums is a key technique for integrating sound and image in a synergistic artform. The nuances in defining the genre will also be addressed seeking to situate electronic visual music alongside related artistic practices.
